Volunteer Services – Newcomer Programming
Volunteer-run group activities for newcomers to build connections in the community.
Programming includes:
- Conversational English Classes
- Computer Classes
- Social Clubs
- Field Trips – Zoo, Sporting Events, Picnics
- Community Garden
- Cooking Classes
- Newcomer referrals to organizations looking for volunteers
Volunteer-run group activities for newcomers:
Conversational English Classes
Volunteers work with adult newcomers who are learning the English language. Participants speak a wide range of native languages.
Computer Classes
A computer course which includes the fundamentals of computers and basic computers skills. Classes include adult newcomers with little to no computer experience.
Social Club
The Social Club connects newcomers to the community through engaging group activities. Social outings provide an opportunity for newcomers to socialize, practice English speaking skills, and participate in recreation and cultural activities.
Community Garden
Newcomers residing at Welcome Place and in the community are introduced to basic flower and vegetable gardening. Emphasis is place on the maintenance and upkeep of the garden.
Cooking Classes for Newcomers
Newcomers learn to cook simple nutritious and economical meals and share the meal together as part of the class.
